Sterling was born on March 24, 1925, in his family’s home in downtown Westminster. He graduated from Westminster High School in 1942, and one year later was drafted by the U.S. Army. Sterling served in an Anti-Aircraft Automatic Weapons Battalion attached to the Ninth Air Force, and helped to guard airstrips in England, Germany, and France.
After the war ended, Sterling returned to Westminster and started working for BGE as a ground hand, climbing utility poles in all kinds of weather to repair transformers and electric outages. He retired from BGE in 1986 as a general supervisor.
Sterling married Clara Lookingbill, a high school classmate, in 1947. He became a member of Grace Lutheran Church as a result of Grace being Clara’s home congregation. Sterling has one daughter, one granddaughter, and one great granddaughter.
